Ten years ago when someone said wizzywig, I'd say Oh yeah I know where that is, over by Tower Records, 711 6th North. As in “…Wong Doody has a ‘teener to WizzyWig and you’re the only one clear right now and I know you’re at 1800 Westlake North but it’s all you buckaroo.” And you thought you were getting paid well for that three zone ‘teener but you found out later it was all discounted big client zone one prices that paid you about as much as a two-hour. You crossed 5 zip codes to pick up the disk at 216 1st South and got it up to WizzyWig on time, because you were young and motivated by other things. Yes, yes you were.
WYSIWYG is base, base is at WizzyWig, “come to base” has a whole new meaning, it feels different, Tower Records is long gone and there’s a QFC there now.
After a while a messenger can just run on autopilot. Traveling the same habit trails all day, repeatedly going to the same clients repeatedly, over and over repeatedly repeating. Hot spots, big clients, rush rushes. The same line to 1111 3rd Avenue, taken 217,000 times. When you switch jobs, the new client list changes things up a bit, causing you to create some new habit trails and autopilot won’t work for a few days. Which is, A good thing.
