The plane of his shoulders points South by Southeast. While the plane of his hips, compensating for years of uneven shoulders, points North by Northeast. These two planes meet off in the distance east of his body at an acute angle and form a “greater than” symbol in space. The alignment is off kilter, tweaked, but still moving forward.

The right shoulder of the wool sweater shows signs of wear: abrasions, thread-bare, the few remaining threads in the shoulder area, compacted and compressed by an apparent repetitive motion and substantial weight. A top shelf sweater in its prime, now it’s a layer to be worn under a vest or a longsleeve that’s more socially acceptable or at least in one piece.

The left ass pocket area of his Carhartts are worn to gossamer thin threads. The well known name brand cotton duck reduced to well worn gauze like nothingness. Soon the saddle will wear all the way through the pants, creating a hole that will grow and grow and grow rendering the pants useless. 90% solid but blown out in all the right places.

Saturation point

Riding a bike in heavy rain, you reach a point when you cannot possibly get any more wet. Sometimes it only takes 4 minutes to reach that point. If those 4 minutes roll by on your way home, on your way to dry clothing, on your way to a 20 minute shower, dry socks and a bowl of soup, you’re set. But if those 4 minutes roll by on your way into work, you’re in a for a long day.

0.00% Cotton

Wool, nylon, polypropylene,  lycra-spandex, neoprene, plastic, rubber, polyester, rayon, Dri-fit, Gore-Tex high tech this or that, whatever it takes. But leave the cotton at home for a 9 hour jaunt in the rain.
