As this calendar year winds down, 2008 is nearly in sight and I’d like to take a look back at 2007 and examine a few of the things I’ve left behind:
277 12oz paper coffee cups (short Americano, no room)
84 16oz paper coffee cups (tall drip, no room)
50 coffee cups (Foster Pepper free coffee)
97 small Styrofoam clam shells (spicy Teriyaki chicken with rice)
92 large Styrofoam clam shells (café Zum Zum daily lunch special)
92 soft drink cups (café Zum Zum daily lunch special)
43 Styrofoam large deli trays (Dan’s grocery, meatloaf sandwiches)
43 Styrofoam small deli trays (Dan’s: jo-jos, chicken sticks, pizza pockets etc)
34 paper plates (Asian Express buffet)
257 plastic zip-loc bags (snacks from home)
478 chewed pieces of gum (scattered on the streets of downtown Seattle)
479 gum wrappers (in the bottom of my messenger bag)
203 plastic six pack rings
203 black plastic bodega bags
17 broken spokes
16 punctured tubes
12 trashed tires
10 spent brake pads
6 frayed cables
4 worn out chains
3 busted wheels
2 shark-finned chainrings
And a partridge in a pear tree
I don’t own a car. I don’t drive cars very often, unless my friends or relatives are too tired or drunk to drive or we’re going on a road trip (in their car). I am a big fan of FlexCars. So it’s easy to say I’m doing my part…and taking it easy on the environment. Yeah whatever, I don’t ride a bike because I’m worried about the environment. I ride a bike for a lot of personal reasons and the low carbon dioxide emissions are a side effect. But take a look at that pile of trash I put out during the work day.
Happy Holidays.
