Utility cycling...
Over the ship canal and through the park to big sister’s house we go. A bag overflowing with gifts for friends and family. Riding the one-speed grocery bike. It’s got giant platform pedals with reflectors built in, circa 1975, because they feel good riding with a pair of old work boots. Heavy and slow. But it’s Christmas and I’ve got no hard deadlines, no rushes on board, and time to enjoy the view in GasWorks park with a Milwaukee’s Best. But even with gloves on and a custom made
coozie my hands are getting cold in the wind. 35 and windy on the shore of Lake Union feels pretty cold. Gotta keep moving.
I pass only 4 other cyclists this Christmas morning on the Burke-Gilman, three in full-on team kits layered up professionally and looking good, and one dude rolling closer to my style today, on a old hoopty literally clunking road bike bundled up in a mish mash of scarves and winter garments. All four of them were extra friendly when we passed. But I am quite sure none of them were wearing work boots or packing any beer.
