it's definitely stupidity. and it's definitely a power-trip thing. "i'm the man here, i hold my hand up to the elevator door and decide who goes in or not, and then i tell the elevator when it can close it's doors. i win." or maybe even when they get in the elevator and block the button panel and then ask which floors everyone is going to.
