corner store

March 23, 2007

I'm a big fan of the corner store, the Mom 'n Pop, the little deli, the local bodega, the malt liquor grocery. A 600 square foot retail space with 500 square feet devoted to beer and the remainder to candy and cigarettes. Yeah, they have what I need.

This store however gets my attention because of the simple architecture. Basic, versatile, simple. This building has held a variety of businesses from light industrial to manufacturing to retail to mysterious gay bar to corner store. Much like the building next door, where the new Victrola has opened up. Formerly an auto shop. I like that.

If you build an IHop it will always look like an IHop. Same goes for Pizza Hut and McDonald's architecture. If you build a simple versatile solid building like this one it will pay off. The hollow thrill of cutting edge technology loses out to the comfort and reliability of proven technology in my book. I'm a Luddite perhaps. You say I sound like a grumpy old man, well maybe you don't know how old I really am.  I'm a realist,  a pragmatist and a pessimist but I know where to get a six pack of tall boys for $3.50.
