A saddle with its nose wrapped in tape is a common sight downtown. The first layer starts to peel away from the shell, then the padding is exposed, then it's a messenger saddle. At that point you can tape it up, tear it off, or just ignore it and ride it into the ground. When I see $400 carbon rail carbon seats in bike catalogs I laugh. I visualize one on my work bike and me hopping off and tossing my bike against a building to lock-up and the saddle crunching and grinding on brick walls and bike racks all day.
I own three Flite saddles and two of them are wrapped in tape. And the third one hasn't started working downtown yet. That's two out of three and will be three in the near future. So, based on me and me alone, I can confidently say that 67% of all messenger owned flite saddles are wrapped in electrical tape.
Nick busted out the duct tape on his saddle. Leland hasn't taped up his Flite yet. Dave did a drastic tear-away on his ABC bike. Travis used tastfully matching white electrical tape. I trimmed and taped my perforated Flite. and finally, Fever's saddle is a perfect example of riding a piece of equipment into the ground, then continuing to ride it for years after that.
