consult the messenger

April 26, 2007

I’ve spoken many times about how messengers are very hard on equipment. Any bike, any bike part, accessories and clothing will all be put to the ultimate test if they go to work full time with a messenger. The bikes and cycling are fairly obvious and technical clothing and accessories are only a half-step away. However, I also believe messengers could be hired on as consultants in a variety of settings. Not only because many messengers don’t hesitate to share their opinions and feelings but because messengers are out there on the streets working in and around all kinds of obstacles every stinking day.

Imagine a messenger brought onto the job site for a day, paid a healthy consulting fee and asked to share his expertise on urinal design, urinal placement, automatic toilet flush mechanisms, stall size, toilet paper dispensers and hand soap choices. Or another messenger brought into an architect’s office to meet with designers about furniture choices for the lobby of a new office tower.

The list goes on. Traffic flow, traffic light timing, traffic mitigation devices, police relations, road construction, food packaging, beverage containers, daily lunch specials, advertising, happy hour menus, elevator design, transfer lobbies, elevator button construction and layout, user friendly architecture, building directories, building security, bike rack design and placement, breath mints, chewing gum, personal hygiene, sports drinks, dehydration, urban density, gentrification, affordable housing and so on and on.
