box

May 3, 2007

yesterday at the very end of the day I got a box job due in 10 minutes, which was no big deal because it was only going three blocks away and I didn't give it a second thought...until I got across the street and dropped it. It did a slow motion flip off my handlebars and landed on its top safely keeping the contents inside and in order, which is good because the box contained about 4000 pages of very important legal documents stacked up with nothing holding them together but their own weight and of course the lid to the box wasn't taped on. For a moment I visualized 4000 pieces of paper blowing around a rain soaked 4th Avenue at 4:52pm. Then I picked up the box put it back on my bars and delivered it.

For those of you who have never riden with box on your handlebars, you can simulate it at home by buying 10 reams of paper and unwrapping them, toss them in a file box, set the lid on the box but do not tape it closed, then ride around your neighborhood in traffic and pretend you're in hurry, and pretend that paper is very important legal documents. Try white-lining, try curb hopping, try talking to your imaginary dispatcher. And pretend you're getting paid  extra for your extra efforts, that's what I do.

I've had nightmares about this happening! I'll make sure to tape all my most important legal documents once I get them in the box! Yippies!

I would just tape all of the papers together with that string tape stuff that grandma wraps your X-mas gifts with. Copy Received.

I wouldn't have dropped the box if it was on my CETMA rack...
