I’ve never really been a fan of folding bikes, but after Justin and I spoke with this guy he convinced me that if I were to buy a folding bike I’d buy a Brompton They’re made in the UK of reinforced steel with cast iron joints. British through and through with a Brooks saddle and Sturmey-Archer three speed internal rear hub. They have a little derailleur too making it a six-speed, which is more than enough to get you where you’re going. They’re not light, weighing in at around 27 pounds. But they’re solid and durable and fold up in less than 30 seconds to the size of microwave oven. Bromptons have a loyal following and they seem to look condescendingly towards Bike Fridays which are made in the USA.
Bromptons easily fit in the overhead compartment on a plane. This guy, the yellow bike owner, has ridden his Bromptons all over the world with his wife and taken them on every form of public transportation. Avoiding the $80 charge that airlines charge to bring your bike on the plane would be great. If you travel a lot with your bike, a folding bike or one with S & S couplings at least would make sense. And your investment would soon pay for itself.
I took the red bike photo last year outside the Admin Building, and at the time I didn’t know it was a Brompton. It just might be owned by the same guy, or maybe it’s his wife’s.
If you stay in one place long enough, things will come around again.
If you travel a lot you’ll end up back where you started.
