what's in the bag?

June 16, 2007

Yesterday I waited 20 minutes for a rush that wasn’t ready. By the time they finally brought it out my legs had turned to rocks and I had to ride straight up Pill Hill to a doctor’s office because these documents were “very important” and had to be there right away.

The whole way up I felt terrible, no air in my tires, brake pads rubbing, chain line way off, crank bolts loose, my cleats worn out and slipping out the pedals, my bag weighed 1000 pounds and I didn’t eat lunch. It was all in my mind…but it wasn’t.

This morning I reached in my bag to get some quarters to do laundry and this is what I found:

$3.59 in change
1 DANK docuholder
7 Perkins docuholders
New York Times book review
Various post cards and stickers
5 pens
1 sharpie
1 hi lighter
14 binder clips
13 rubber bands
46 paper clips
Wallet
Keys
Motorola i305 Nextel
Chapstick
Axley technical eyewear x (2)
Orange cap
Brighter Orange cap
Pearl Izumi vest
AVA Counterbalance arm warmers
Long sleeve shirt
Camera
DANK coozie 16oz
RAGBRAI coozie 12oz
Notary Stamp (Washington State, residing in Seattle)
Small notebook
Frame pump
Inner tube
Bike tools (minimal)
6 zip ties
Water bottle
Bag of raisins
Sugar free gum

That’s my bag in its “neutral state”, when there’s no work on board, no very important legal documents that must be filed right away, no passports from the Consulate, no Excise Tax affidavits to record. No beer. Just my purse.

I tossed the paper clips, took out the loose change, removed a couple  ballpoint pens, got rid of the raisins and  the book review. But the rest of it is essential.

The bag is about half a pound lighter but it's all in my mind.

at least you didn't have to climb pill hill with this load...what do you think Ali could make if he rocked the Big Boda Load-Carrying Bicycle instead of the cetma? http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=11032381

Well you obviously wasted 46 paper clips that could have been recycled to holten.I'd personally steer clear of the sugar-free gum, If you're going to chew gum at least support a local company like the denture plate laboratory at 9th and olive/howell and go for the big league chew. You're a real messenger now. welcome to the big leagues kid.
