The Cascade Bike Club offers classes and programs to encourage people to ride their bikes to work. A little nudge, a confidence boost for cyclists who perhaps don’t feel comfortable riding in the traffic they’ll encounter along the way to their place of work. I think this is a great idea and is a big part of what’s needed in order to get more people out of their cars and commuting by bike.

Yesterday I rode with Justin on his way home. A ten mile jaunt heading north out of the city. And as I tried to keep up with him all I could think of was the “bike buddy” program, as if he was my bike buddy showing me the bike commuting ropes. He was pointing out potholes, gravel patches and stuff like 4 way intersections that don’t require much slowing down. The highlight was the 5-way intersection at the Fremont Bridge. We were coasting down the hill on Dexter towards the bridge and he’s telling me about the cross traffic and what it tends to do and when it tends to do it, all the while watching the flow then he says “like now” and we gap the intersection at full speed passing a few commuters patiently waiting for the light who all turned and gawked and I was laughing like a small child.
