Running a red light…$100
No Helmet…$100
No Brakes…$100
Blocking an intersection …$120
Seattle Police having nothing better to do…priceless
Bigger fish to fry, yeah, once in a while, if a fatcat republican politician is in town, or there’s some code-red crisis. But sometimes they can’t resist the guy on the bike, especially if he’s dressed like Santa Claus or has a tri spoke front wheel or caught big air off the wheel chair ramp. Or the attractive woman on the bike, pulled over for no apparent reason, only to discover the cop just wants her phone number. They put in 9 hours. and how many donuts can you eat in 9 hours? After 15 years, donuts get old. So why not pass some time with a cyclist. ?
An un-named messenger recently got a ticket for running a red light with an additional fine for not having any brakes on his bike. This is the first no-brake ticket I’ve heard of in Seattle. Portland got a lot of press last year about fixed gear bikes sans brakes and heat from the po-lice. Once again, PDX is ahead of the curve. Perhaps the cops here are cracking down on messengers and non messengers more because of a recent well publicized bike fatality involving a kid on a fixed gear bike. Perhaps he had no brake. Perhaps he had no helmet. Perhaps. Perhaps. Perhaps.
