can you see me now?

January 6, 2007

Last Tuesday I saw a ped get hit in the crosswalk at a very busy intersection in the core. It was 3pm and sometimes in Seattle it’s pretty dark and rainy by then. I don’t think the driver ever saw the guy. A relatively slow collision as the driver was trying to turn right, but still enough to bust the guy up a bit. As the cops arrived on the scene I gave the ped my number and said I’d be a witness. Soon I’ll be contacted by his attorney, then a short time later by the attorneys representing the driver’s insurance company and so on. It may turn into a hassle but I just hope the ped gets his medical bills covered.

Last Wednesday at 1:09pm I was hit in the crosswalk on 4th Ave doing a lazy roll from the courthouse to the admin building. A woman looking to turn right onto James was blocking the crosswalk as she looked to her left for an opening in traffic. I was approaching her on her left with a few peds too, she was looking through me, I guess, as I rolled towards her. Just as I got around her car she hit the gas and hit me. I unclipped my right foot and got it out the way as her bumper was in full contact with my bike. My foot came down on the hood of her car and I put all my weight on it. Standing on her car with my right foot and still clipped in with my left, holding my bike I was spewing random combinations of offensive words and looking at the driver thinking “can you see me now?” At that point she did see me and she had to take a moment to pause in her cell phone conversation and flick the ash from her cigarette.
