believe the hype

...Ya just don’t get it, do ya partner?

Said the off-duty cop on my left as he tried to get me to stop in the middle of the hill so a line of office workers could drive out of their parking garage and get their single occupant vehicles into the traffic of the evening commute. But I had three minutes to get to the Court of Appeals and I wasn’t going to stop so I swung wide right around him and his line of cars. Only to come upon another off-duty cop on my right doing the exact same thing for a parking garage across the street, creating a beautiful chicane in normally humdrum University Street.

Yeah maybe I don’t get it. Maybe that’s it. But I made that filing. And just so we’re clear on this: I made it, not because I care about the attorney, or the law firm, or the dispatcher. It’s a challenge, an arbitrary goal, a hill to climb, a hoop to jump through. I’m internally motivated, and arbitrariness motivates me as much as anything. It sure isn’t the money.

Pointing at a pile of horse shit on Fourth Avenue, while loudly exclaiming “horseshit”. that’s what it’s all about. No, really, that's what it's all about.

Sometimes…the poster is better than the original; the trailer is better than the movie; the cover version is better than the real one; the chase, the hunt, the anticipation is better than the score; the assumption is more entertaining than the reality; the gift shop is better than the museum; the memory is more erotic than the truth. Believe the hype.

The arbitrary goals, that's what it's all about. I had 32 of them yesterday. I did see you on 4th and Columbia and waved in my mind, but I had a corner to make and another one of those arbitrary goals to pickup or deliver. I know you understand.

Yo I saw you too, bombing down Columbia and smiled and thought of Mr. Jackass Pedestrian doing the chicken dance, bob 'n weave in the crosswalk trying to help you out.
