The White Industries freewheel

Zero run out, CNC'd machined cro-mo freewheel, sealed cartridge bearing, sealed externally, 36 points of engagement, three pawl mechanism. 1.37" x 24 tpi, accepts 1/8" or 3/32" chain. 16t, 17t, 18t, 19t, 20t, 21t, 22t, 23t. I'm not just making this stuff up. I rode one across Iowa. I ride one everyday in Seattle. They're expensive, but they're the best.

the double double. very cool. I like the identical chain length. Switching gears with just a quick chain line swap and chain tension adjustment. An aircraft machinist who was into bikes...

Actually, no need to readjust chain tension, assuming it's not too tight to begin with and you can put a little perpendicular pressure on the chain as you turn the cranks to "derail" it onto the other gear. Probably doable, at least in a pinch. Identical chain length also means no brake adjustment, which is really cool.
